Dis Un Il Im Ir features Bryan Jacobs’ compositions for instruments and electronics performed by five of New York City’s most exciting new music ensembles.
Jacobs’ is known for his dramatic musical constructions that constantly challenge the listener’s expectations. Monophonic structures, often driven by a clear and simple rhythmic pulse, serve as the backbone for developments rich with confrontation and resolution. Electronic sounds extend instruments into the super-human realm, exaggerating the spastic gestures that drive the acoustic writing.
Performing on this album is Ensemble Pamplemousse, International Contemporary Ensemble, Talea Ensemble, Ekmeles, and Wet Ink Large Ensemble – five groups of musicians who are redefining what experimental and classical new music is in relation to our modern world.
New York City occupies a particular place within the field of experimental music composition. Fueled by a passion for dissidence, performers and composers engage in a special form of rebellious music-making inspired by distortion, improvisation, amplification, and feedback, all while creatively navigating the economic difficulties that have shaped art in the city for decades. Each musician contributes to a vibrant community with distinct individuality. Underlying it all is a feeling that this is a hand-made construction independent of the commercial musical economy. The compositions presented on this recording are inspired by the ensembles that are performing them and the New York City artistic community as a whole. Dis Un Il Im Ir showcases one composer’s unique voice and the ensembles that inspired him.
